Freeing Space

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Having a customer insisting in starting a new software project always again with a complete copy of his biggest database, I again and again get the request to free disk space from him afterwards.

I’m not sure how often i said to him that this doing is sense and meaning lessand in it’s follow does end in a hugh ressource consuption and a lot of man power cleaning things up later on again. Anyway, he always comes up with the argument that he needs most recent data to be sure his programs would work as wishes and designed for. But at the end it means me running over all and checking the systems for waisted and orphaned stuff.

Not that I would mind in general – as long as he pays me I’m in principle fine with it – but being faced with such an odd and boring day reviewing all I again and again think about this can’t be true. One time made the effort to think about a few clever routines extracting just the necessary and needed up2date data out of the production system and a lot of money could get saved.

Sure it is not mine and he seems keen about to spend it, but it is really odd seeing about all world is compalining about difficulties but not willing to do their part to improve the overall conditions.
We save by wasting money …. How odd is that?      At least I was able to free several terrabyte of disk space today ….. more

Heading into the unknown

Monday, February 9th, 2009

Even I’m in business since ages, I never had to do with that "evil" coming out of Walldorf. Ok, as for not eveyone will know, I’m speaking about SAP. And curious but true, all the years there were never a reason for me to touch it.

Now this will change today as for I’m heading directly to the spring of evil … the so called Headquarter of SAP at Walldorf visiting a 2 weeks startup training.

I have to confess that it has it’s own attraction to know to visit the headquarter of one of the worlds’ largest Software companies and I have to ommit that I’m curious now.

But hah! I’m not that easily to impress. At the end of the training I will make my vote about first. ;-)

up2date?!

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

I have to confess that I’m something like a version junkie. The message about a never version is available normally immediately switches me in explorer mood and whenever I can effort the few minutes downloading and installing the newer software I hardly can resist to do.

Isn’t it a great and good feeling, knowing about you run on the most recent code including all error and security fixes, as also a great set of new features to work with? And finally to finding out a about the new features the software does now offer to make your life simplier?

Just these days I have to say that it nearly gets too much. Counting all the time it needs to get the OS, the virus scanner, your major applications and all those thousands of little helpers you have installed up2date, I really start to wonder whether or not that all make sense!

When I want to power off the system – Why does it insist telling me to wait until all hotfixes are applied?

Really, it isn’t that long since software was shipped on zillions of diskettesĀ  – Yeah! I’m speaking about those times before cds and dvds turned into the ususal installation media and updates were just one mouse click away like today – and nearly nobody did make effort patching or updating his/her software without a new major software version was available.

Is it really just me? Or do others also start to think about update should get splitted in obligate, recommended and nice to have and every software should offer you the option to choose between different update strategies?

Coolgorilla

I guess it’s now nearly two years since I have read about Free Phrase Books for iPod offered by Coolgorilla. When I downloaded that stuff once they wanted to have an email address form me as usual. But can you imagine how surprised I was to hear again from them yesterday, now offering a “Free London Travel Guide for iPods, iPhone and Mobiles” for download?

Thats the way I like friendly companies to act …. being quiet until there is something really interesting to share! ;-)

Here is the link: London Travel Guide for iPod offered by Coolgorilla.
