Registrars again

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Yesterday I wrote about some trouble a friend of me had registering a new domain and even I’ve tried to help we ended up in giving up yesterday.

Today now I had again a closer look and it was really interesting for me figuring out about the necessary info within all those French stuff on the registrars’ pages. Sadly me not speaking one word in French language, but with enough will and time there is a way through everything.

Now finally it even looks like I have to excuse the registrar as for it wasn’t their service causing us trouble. After nearly an hour looking in it, I found out about some tiny little differences between both nameservers of the hosting business and as the last and final main issue, a wrong set domain responsible email addy within the SOA information of the DNS.

It’s for sure some mystery how it comes that values you do not even have to specify and normally should get filled and pointing to your hosting provider can be wrong. Especially when the get set and some automatism. But with luck I was able to fix it within the reseller package of the hosting business myself and just a few minutes later the registrars’ pages accepted the change.

Things can turn out soooooooooooooo simple, when you finally have figure them out. :-)

Registrars

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

Boy, believe me! There is nothing more annoying then registrar services. Today I was dealing with a friend together about setting up a new domain for him. You think we archived it? You’re wrong! :-(

The domain was registered easily. Sure the get money for it! Also the hosted environment was created in seconds.
Changing the DNS and nameserver info of the earlier registered domain … impossible……………

I’ve checked it twice and queried the nameservers after each other with perfect results. THEY DO answer perfectly. But the registrar’s system does not think so! How come? Honestly I have no idea. But today I do fed up with that really. Unbelievable!!

GoDaddy

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

Since years I use GoDaddy as a reliable and cheap registrar. Once brought there by a suggestion of a friend I’ve never had anything to complain about their service …. until yesterday.

Having moved some domain I needed to update the nameserver info of this domain and entered the GoDaddy pages for it.
One domains needs renewing!! Yeah, I did know about anyway and it was right this domain I had moved before.

So I choosed renewing right out of the menue tree below the login and did throw the domain in into the shopping cart.
One domain for one year $US 9,99 - together $US 9,99 - total invoice $US 10,19 …. ummmmm

What the hell is that? I asked myself: Didn’t I do well enough at school? Did I miss something? Is this some kind of special American way to calculation I’m not aware about??

Anyway I decided to ignore that and therefore headed on changing the nameserver instead. Having done that I thought again about renewing the domain and did select it now out of the domain overview.

Perhaps the one year only? Lets try again with two years instead ….

One domain at $US 19,98, todays price $US 18,76, fee $US .40  - total invoice 12,83  ????  ….. gulp :-|
Come on boy! What is that? You’re going to drive me crazy? What do they do? Using dices to estimate my total payment?

It needed me a while to I figure out is was a mix of  $US and Euro shown up here and everything was quit ok though.
But you believe me that I hate such inadequate business behavior? Pages not pointing out things clearly! grrrrrrrrr

ps: Right now my new gadget was delivered by UPS!! (It’s playtime now ….. yeaaaaaaaaaaah!)

Noticeable Serials

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

Recently on monday Microsoft announced that they will make effort locking down noticeable software license keys.
Nothing to say about that. They write software and want to sell it ….

But tell me! What is a noticeable software license key? They on I bought with and found  on my old notebook?

Sure it is a nice and helpfully arrangement new systems today are bundled and offered with some valid OS license key keeping costs low and giving me the feeling I’m doing right. But what about the system gets old and I buy a new one and don’t like the new burning software on it and rather would prefer going on to use the older one I’m used to used from my prior hardware?

What about the old hardware is still functional and working and I’m going to sell it on eBay?

Sure the license keys will go with the hardware, but what about the changing owner? Will this new owner then have such a noticeable software license key?

I really do understand Microsoft and other companies. But isn’t the problem also forced by them and there more than archaic licencing modells?

Today in times of fast broadband internet connections you of don’t even get an installation medium. You download the software and request a valid serial key online easy paid by paypal or credit card.

Where the hell there is a problem to found something similar than the internet domain registration services to buy and administer your license keys online? Even perhaps on some time limited base?

Sometimes I don’t need the whole cake for ever. What about buying a Creative Studio or Office license for a quarter of a year with the option to get a cheap and easy renewing?

In my eyes it is about time for those big software companies to think about new and creative licencing modells.

Just my 5ct on that! ;-)
