Devicescape

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

A few days ago I strolled through AppStore checking out new stuff there. By coincidense I did run over an app called Easy Wi-Fi by Devicescape offered there in a few "different" flavours regarding to the underlaying carrier used.

Now I should say that since a while I missed a handy app enabling me to use my hotspot connection details easily to login into secured hotspots like you often see at Starbucks or McDonald’s.  Not that I really would relay very often on the services of the 2nd service, but with the hotspots as an option they look farway more attractive now and the other service I visit anyway frequently.

Now seeing it and giving it a test was nearly one thing … especially it is offered for free … and I was very amazed seeing it working very well.

It working very well seemed rather strange to me, by knowing about such hugh company like T-Mobile does fail since ages to hand over you a working App doing the same. Now my hotspot flatrate seemd to make sense for the first time really!

Available as a PC client software only, the Mac OSX equivalent of a login tools is plainly missing and the browser https://jfvbvbvd bookmark might work as they suggest, but in my eyes is far away from being a really useful solution.

So therefore encouraged I’ve downloaded there Mac proggy and sadly found out about thereis a compatibility issue with Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.(1) preventing this gorgeous solution to work.

Feeling a bit disappointed I’ve searched thereforums and FAQ and found some article answered by a tech guy called John, promising a new port soon and thereby asking for people willing to test for them. I didn’t mind and offered my help and nearly instantly got contacted by John. Now only a few days later I got a test suit from him and right the first test of it was a success!

If you ever  nagging have looked for a similar solution like me…. Give it a test! This company does rock for sure.

John! You have a new friend here. Feel free to contact me for another test whenever needed. :-)

A black day for Germany

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

Driving home this evening I got aware about some special news break within the normal radio program. Listening to a comment of our "Angie" speaking about a black day for Germany made me curious and I focused to what the had to say.

This morning 16 humans got killed by a teenager taking a gun with him into his school and firing it without warning first. A school at Winnenden, a town within Baden Württemberg (not even far away).

How scaring and unbelievable it that? Doesn’t this only happens far away in the "States"?

No, for sure not! But happening something like this directly within "your frontyard" – ok, there are a few Kilometre in between – is scaring and does make me feeling stunned and speechless.

What has gone wrong? The raising of this teenager by his parents? Or did the whole system fail? Was it the extensive playing of "violent" games on the PC on an ongoing basis, as a lot of people in the news do now assume?

Honestly I have no answer. I’m speechless today ….

Language issues?

Friday, January 30th, 2009

Whenever I write in English, I’m using my second language. Therefore I’m used to write carefully by being aware I never will really do it right … But recently I got two curious feedbacks about making me really wondering about.

Yesterday a fellow wrote me an email with the wishes: Could you quickly send me the sqlstatements for creating two database links between the following Oracle Databases?! Hey! Every stupid nerd could get this syntax in seconds by querying Google for it.

Knowing this I made effort figuring out about why he could have trouble creating these connections and found out about missing TNSNAMES.ORA definitions and created them for him. Being carefully I even created one database link myself successfully and finally wrote back  …. I did blablabla and tested it myself with success. Use the following generic syntax and replace the keywords with appropriate values.

His answer was … I perfectly know the syntax, but have trouble with these two database links now …. Didn’t I wrote I’ve prepared it all?! :-|
Honestly?? Is it me or just him too lazy to read?

The other feedback was as curious as well …. A few days before I’ve wrote about Teamviewer here and passed on a similar info a list. Menioning it’s free for personal usage, within my next line I wrote about it’s handy to check things on a customer PC or MAC from remote! Why does someone then implicitly think I would suggest using this tool in a commercial environment without paying for it first?! :-|

Honestly …. the German Language is much more exact about such things! Is it me, my English or perhaps the language itself?  Or hey my friend! Does it may just need you … thinking one or two more seconds about my lines? :-P

Teamviewer

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

Someone could think that I turned a bit lazy posting here?! And indeed recently I did not really feel in mood making effort thinking about things to write here.
Guess it id forced by our constant cold and ugly conditions here ….

On the other had i was busy with a few things and especially did spent time helping a friend with a few issues on his office pc. Curiously it more or less was some selfhealing thingy. I came, powered the system on and it did run fine and smooth again. :-)

But on another note, I recently  found a cool and easy to use remote control solution which is offered for free and even allow to access systems behind firewalls. Yeah, yeah … no need to mention. I’m awarethis is a big security issue and another nightmare for all network and security admin.

But using it to help a friend or quickly look at a customer’s PC seeing what the customer is seeing or not, I really think about it as a great tool.
Check it out for free here: Teamviewer. It even connect different systems (MAC/Windows) reliable for you.

Windows 7

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

Now it got finally unveiled! The name of the new announce Vista successor is….. tatataaaaahhh Windows 7 – How impressive!!

I really do not like to know how many marketing guys, consultants and even high paid Microsoft folks were sitting about this decisions calling the new Operating System of Microsoft just and plainly Windows 7.

Back to the roots? Giving up all those tries to sell something mainly unsellable by giving it some fancy new name?

Hey!! My system is now running on sexy new Microsoft Vista SP1! And I really like it! It has this rather sexy and neat option scrolling through open windows and another million new features I can’t remember to find and I might never explore again, as for I’m only using it for searching the net, answering my emails, some chatting and really rarely burning some music CDs (for sure a backup copy of my prior bought original soundtrack) for the car…….

How many "Operation System" do we really need? Another 98 new features no one will ever use in daily business?

At a time companies are refusing to upgrade and the actual OS is just able to get sold bundled with some new hardware the question might be allowed. Do we need it? Do we need to upgrade? Why should we upgrade?

Just to figure out the OS does now need more resources and our System (bought last year) does urgently need a memory upgrade to be able to deal again with all those new animations and gimmicks clever Microsoft Developers have invented for us?

Ok, I’m just naming Microsoft here, which is unfair for sure as for other companies do the same …. It’s their job to write and invent new things and exactly the stuff they are making their money with. But thinking about that all, I really ask myself how to think about their actual approach calling their new Windows version just and simply Windows 7.

Perhaps being just honest and naming it purely by what it is? Just another new upgrade of this worldwide, well know and stable settled Microsoft OS for Personal Computer based on X86 architecture?

Will this give more trust to the customer? Will this now making them more wishing to upgrade to it?

Sooner or later we will see …. And I can’t prevent offering that I’m very interested in getting some feedback soon, on how the market will react on that.
