RocketDock

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

I know that I scratch a difficult topic today and that the front between the different parties are very strict enforced - Just  … who cares?!

Whenever a discussion between Mac and PC users comparing there system starts, it ends up in a big discussion comparing all the benefits - depending on which side they are - they believe to have!

I personal never saw it really that polarized.

For sure I’m a major Windows User working with PC’s since the very first IBM XT I touched. But I also have a long and old history working with other Operating Systems  like VMS and Open VMS, Ultrix , TrueUnix 64 nearly all other available UNIX Distributions someone thought about to implement once.

So I guess it just didn’t happend to me, being seriously forced to work with some Macintosh Computer before.

Nevertheless by staying in contact with quiet a lot of folks being confirmed Mac Users by own word, I know a lot about Mac’s and OSX. And I really would lie in case I would try to hide that since a while I’m sneaking around those systems again and again recognising more and more things I like about them.

For example one of those things I really like about Mac OSX is the Dock application it comes with! Some really cool and neat application launcher always just one click away to start some needed application.

Now recently a friend made me aware about some “Dock” clone for Windows which I downloaded and installed.

It is called RocketDock and can be downloaded for free. Try it, and I’m sure you will immediately like it as much as I do!! ;-)

Working under pressure …

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

While working under any pressure is really something I don’t mind, working while you get distracted permanently is a real mess!

It was always one of my abilities to focus on things and working again a general deadline, even when the time limits were rather short. In such situations I can push away all stuff by focusing just to this one and only thing to finish and it quiet often ended up in discussion why I did forget the one or other topic about.

Something I really can’t stand with is about being distracted - better say disturbed - all the time.

Yesterday was such a day! After the morning had started not so bad, I decided to change the file system layout of one of my system. It is an Enterprise Linux System and it must have been ages since I had worked with the Logical Volume Manager.

Anyway I had fun doing it and playing with that stuff again, but then folks around started to annoy me. Calling me all the time asking for silly stuff or just general nonsense!

Now transfering filesystems from one disk to another, updating the fstab appropriate and ensuring your system will boot up correct again is something you should do by being aware about what you are doing.

You might be able to think about what happend :-|

Yes, your right! I made a mistake and the odd “Kernel Panic! screen appeared. :-|

That was the moment when I decided to stop playing with it and start another try today taking time to think about my options to repair it again. Thanks god it needed just 10 minutes today to get the messed up system up and running again.
It is just you need the time and peace to think about it first! :-)

ROCKbox

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

I’m aware that not everyone is such a technique freak like me …. just by coincidence two day ago I found a very interesting and tempting information on the net.

We all know about this very famous iPod MP3 player from Apple?! At this pages here at ROCKbox is a replacement firmware offered for it!

I loaded it into an aged iPod Nano and it works like a charm. It is not a real replacement - Instead you get some dual boot option, now being able to run the old original firmware again, or … which is certainly more likely and the primary option, the new Linux based one. And the new features within are just great - believe me!!

Now, and that is really tempting, I also own an actual iPod classic too (just 4 month old and under full warranty) …. What to do?
