A sunny Day

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Today we have a fresh (no longer really cold) and overall sunny day here. I’m not sure about it is the only reason, but I’m in an overall happy mood today.
So far there wasn’t something really exciting but from time to time I like smooth days just floating along without hassle or excitements.

Since a while it will the also the first evening I’m not planned to do something already and I hope about me will be able to dig into a few things I’m curious about since a while and keen to learn and understand about them. Yeah, I know …. you might think about that as odd …. but I hardly really can slow down not giving my brain something feeling fancy about. Even it might be just something to read and study about.

Today my brother told me that he has ordered some new gadget for him and that is another thing I’m looking forward too, as for it will open the door to some new technical challange tweaking it directly after it arrives. ;-)

Yeah, yeah …. no need to tell me. I’m a nerd when it comes to technical things, I know about. Give me something to play with and I’m happy :-)

I never tried to hide that deep within me there is still this little boy willing to easily get fancy and interested  in everything new and shiny …

As mentioned I actually have two private "projects" going on. But are related and belong to the same field of interest. There is the new fancy gadget I bought lately. And while playing with it does make pretty much success and giving me a lot of pleasure, the other field still sucks. It’s mostly forced by entering totally new ground and touching and working with things never were written to run in this environment.

Some one could say it is all about lost time. And time is indeed what I actually spend much for it. Just already ages ago I found about myself that it is wise to follow my own preferences. And thing I was interested in earlier at a time no other one was, later on turned out into a big hype.

So I tend to call it playing, as for there is no real serious background behind. But at the end it is just dealing with my innermost interests and getting familiar with things early, which soon might be essential to know about anyway. So for me it is no lost time for sure!!

Funny point is that about all my effort getting it working, two other guys have recognised and now got interested themself. Now we are sticking our heads together frequently, by nearly feel like a group of pioneers or discoverer touching new and undiscovered ground.

SuperDuper

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

It is great when you have reached a state with a friend from were on you just blind trust into his or her recommendations.
This is for sure not easy to get and needs a special situation or a longer common history getting familiar with each other.

But back to the topic… A few of you might have got out of my earlier postings that I recently have bought myself a new gadget to play with. Something new, fancy, from principle not necessary and perhaps just an expensive new toy …. we will see.
The truth is that I like working with it since the beginning. And even everything is very different, at the end and looking behind you will find yourself working with as you would never have done differently before very quickly.

With the intention to speed up the learning curve I asked a friend for a few recommendations – personal likes and favorites – and got back a list out of ten software packages as the minimum requirement to add to feel found and happy.

As for the list was coming from one of those friends I have such a mentioned "trust in blind" relationship I didn’t requery things and straight away started to install all packages following her list top down.

Now there was this SuperDuper pointed out as a must have on that list and it directly answered me a nagging question. As for me working as a system administrator for years during the past, backups are essential to me.  But backups and a full system recovery are two very different things!  Someone not being able to restore / repair a system from scratch bringing  it exactly again into an equal state like shortly before the crash …. is not allowed to call himself/herself a system administrator.

On the other hand having those experiences restoring system by tape boot for example then restoring a standalone backup, recovering or cloning windows system with Ghost and Ghostwalker, sysprep, tar, cpio and and and ….. I’m sure you never will be able to image me looking when I had a short glance through the options of SuperDuper …. You want a full and bootable copy? Fine! …. then I will do ….

WOW …. Thats Tops!
