People and their appearance
Wednesday, February 4th, 2009Sometimes people become prominent and widely know by their doing, knowledge, generally their appearance or the way they behave. This is nothing bad at all and if it runs well they will become an example for others or at least a helpfully and valuable contact to have.
The disadvantage of such a well known position is that from time to time you then are force to set or define rules for others. Rules about behaving, best practise in something – perhaps the best way to code something – A style guide whatever. Or at the and just plainly rules about todos or not todos.
Doing this people will try to follow you as for you are the reference for them. And the more that goes on the more responsibility you will have to take. It is ongoing.
The problem I see is for "you" to ensure your own rules as well. Remember and live them whenever necessary! (As for other do know about and will messure you by your own rules!)
Yesterday I recognised (with a big smile) such a person, being a highlighted "reference" for a specific group of people, fooling her own rules.
Nothing happend! No one was offended! At the end it just made someone more "human" like, touchable and normal again. A little "vaux pas". You know?
I just can’t prevent me recognising and smiling about it though!
